Hi there all metalsmith friends,
I hope you're enjoying your days at the bench as much as I do. We have had nearly a month of perfect weather here in Europe.
Bright sunny days makes for happy work in the workshop!
In this newsletter I will cover the topic of rivet making.
In many of my sculptures I use rivets extensively.
I often use rivets in making jewelry. Rivets are a form of cold joining metal parts together.
Sometimes for a decorative purpose creating movement, but mostly to join metals where soldering is difficult or impossible due to heat considerations.
Or where two objects have to be joined and held in place and then soldered afterwards.
The bottom line is that making rivets by free hand that all are uniform and neat proved to be problematic.
So I designed the Rivet Maker Tool.
This tool allows you to make 1 mm and 1.5 mm rivets both with a tiny and medium sized head in a uniform and consistent manner.
Another part of the Rivet Maker Tool are the cup holders, which allow for easy peening without damaging decorative rivet heads.
And above all, it is easy to use.

This close-up of the thick top rivet heads formed with precision and equal in size.
The wire is placed in the rivet former and cut to an exact length using the wire gauge to make a small flat top rivet.
The hammer taps are spread around the outer edges of the wire, all the while turning the center holder around.
Here a thick top rivet has been tapped into the rivet die former.
Using the ejector pin to release the thick top rivet from the former.
This video demonstrates how to use the River Maker.

This is a free tutorial on making a Riveted Three Tone Ring. This ring can be made with or without the Rivet Maker by making the rivets free hand. The rivets are filed down to become invisible.
A three tone ring made of 5 washers.
Here the ring is being riveted.
Of these new tutorials, two include the use of rivets.
This photo locket pendant has domed disks and a hinge that have to be aligned with precision. Careful flame control is practiced with the many solder joints.

This landscape pendant can be made with several background options such as blackened silver or titanium. The landscape elements are riveted at different heights to create a depth perspective.

I hope you all enjoyed this 'riveting' newsletter!
Comments and suggestion are always welcome.
In my next newsletter I will be exploring the use of plaster of Paris, the use of sticky waxes in the manufacture of jewelry.
Also, I have started work on designing and building a 'spot welder' that makes is easy to solder on earring posts. Hopefully, I will be able to show some preview pictures of the design.
Until then, have fun making lots of jewelry!
My warmest regards,
Hans Meevis
