High quality oval gemstones are cut for weight, resulting in a non-standardized sizes. When making your own collets, you make your collet to perfectly fit the oval gemstone measurements.
This tutorial shows you how to make an oval crown collet. Eight prongs are filed out of a tube, that forms the base of the oval crown collet.
It is possible to bend a clean oval with pliers but an oval bezel mandrel (triblet) is the correct tool to use.
