Greetings fellow metalsmithers,
I can't actually believe that it is the end of the year, but outside we are in the minus temperatures, so I guess it's true!
Over the years, I have made several holiday pendants where I used marquise shaped stones as candle flames, so I thought that it would be appropriate to make this newsletter marquise based one.
A marquise shape is basically two section of a larger circle joined together.
Making a ring or collet for such a shape comes with it's own unique challenges.
The tip of the gemstone being probably the most important.
In the horizontal marquise ring tutorial below, I go into particular detail on what not to do when a marquise is being set.
Then there is a marquise collet tutorial, which has it's own unique characteristics to itself.
My rectangular catch tutorial is a 'how to' on an essential part of jewelry.
Being able to make one it a good skill to have in your skill set toolbox and also allows for a clearer view of what to do if one ever comes in for repairs or if a bespoke one has to be made.
This infographic summarizes how to bend square tubing.
This method only works when your tubing is made of gold. Silver will react with the acid. The copper is etched out with nitric acid.
The copper acts as a support when bending the square tubing. This design has an inlay and is set with diamonds but you can equally just have the curved square tubing.
