Dear Metalsmiths,

We've reached the busiest time of the year for all jewelry makers.

As always earrings are a top request as a gift. That is what we're going to look at.

NEW TUTORIALS

Making Flower Ear Studs

Some stylistic flower ear studs. These studs only contain four separate parts, even though they look quite complicated. The 'flower' is pierced out of one piece of metal, which makes construction much more sure and simple.

Making Triangle Ear Studs

The triangular ear studs have an interesting aspect, whereby one thicker central prong holds down three stones simultaneously. And only the tip prongs are dedicated to a single stone. This makes for easier construction, and one can get away with it because earrings do not suffer as much wear as a ring does.

Fiddlestick Ring Tutorial

I call this a Fiddlestick ring. This is a somewhat retro design, being very popular in the mid 80's.

It is an exercise in soldering bars at 90° and also looks great with different colored stones set in it.

How to Make a Toggle Clasp

There is no ways you can go wrong learning how to make a traditional toggle catch.
These are great for a heavy chain, and also sometimes are the focal point of a chain, doubling up not only as a catch, but also as a pendant, especially when set with stones.

INFOGRAPHICS

I like infographics format, so I have been playing around with various techniques and making a small story, which summarizes a jewelry making concept.

VIDEO BENCH TIP

This video shows how to shape your bench peg by heating a coin and burning a circle in the peg to hold a ring.

I hope everyone is having a great jewelry making time, wherever you are!

Kindest regards,
Hans Meevis
