Dear fellow metalsmithers,
As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, I have been doing some work on clasps and catches.
First, a standard spring clasp also called a bolt ring.
Or at least one that is cut in half.
Sometimes the question comes up how to repair a spring clasp.
Mostly, it's fiddly work taking up more time than is economically viable.
Then there is the issue of finding the correct spring.
It really makes sense to rather buy a replacement clasp from a jewelry supply house.
That said, in the case of high-end designer chains and bracelets heavy in weight, the selection from the jewelry supply houses is very limited.
So hand making a bespoke clasp for your chain or bracelet becomes an option.
With that in mind, I have made a tutorial that covers a push slip clasp and how to make a simple version and a more ornate one like the one pictured below.
I googled these spring suppliers (no affiliation) in the US and Europe :
http://www.ottofrei.com/Round-Spring-Steel-Wire-36-Coil (USA - CA94607)
24 and 28 gauge
https://www.loosco.com/products/wire/ (USA - CT06259)
http://www.wintwire.co.uk/spring-wire.htm (UK - Sheffield)
https://www.tevema.com/en/ (Netherlands)
Part number TEVAMS-023884 Stainless Steel Spring Wire 0.4mm and 0.5mm
(Dutch Description - Verenstaaldraad RVS Dr0.40 en Dr0.50 )
There is a selection of different types and styles of clasp / catches on my website which you can find in this link under the Component Section.
And this is a free tutorial on making a interlocking c-clasp.
