Hello colleagues and friends,
I have a fascination for re-creating 'old school ' objects.
A while ago, I came across the picture that I thought was absolutely delightful.
I thought of how many times I had eaten walnuts and never once did I actually LOOK at the shell and think “ Hey, this could be used to make a box”
Which is somewhat embarrassing on a personal level, because apart from being fascinated by old time techniques, I also have a 'let's make a little box' fascination.
As an example of previous boxes made, here is a silver one with a dolphin theme that I made using the Lost Wax Casting method.
For reference, this one is about 60 mm x 40 mm in size. ( 2.5 in x 1.5 in)
And here is another one that the lost wax method was also used along with small pieces of stained glass for the sides.
With that in mind, I decided to re-create the perfume box with the addition of a bit of my flair.
This project has various different disciplines and techniques that are taught or explained in the tutorial.
With this tutorial the object is to work on these skills
- Preparing the walnut
- Making a frame for the walnut
- Making a catch and hinge
- Working on the bottle holders
- Perfume bottles made from tubing
- Making thread for the bottle tops
- Making the applicator stick
- Adding decorative detail such as gemstones
When carving the walnut use a light to shows the wall thickness.
Metal plate shaped to the walnut with tungesten carbide bur.
The tube soldered from the inside.
Making the tread for the perfume bottles.
On a more traditional note, I've made these new tutorials.
